How to protect your hair during a Vancouver heat wave
We experienced our first record-breaking heat wave of 2023! That’s great for those enjoying this early burst of summer, but it is a nightmare for your hair. So we thought it would be a great time to give some tips on how to protect your hair from that summer sun and sizzling heat.
The sun is actually very damaging to unprotected hair. We are a busy hair salon in Kitsilano, Vancouver, so we see the unfortunate results of all the heat waves and heat domes we’ve been getting here. UV rays and intense heat dry out the hair’s cuticles (outer layer) which causes all sorts of issues. For instance, sun-damaged hair is prone to breakage and split ends. It also becomes more brittle and frizzy. Over time it starts to look duller and even loses colour. Did you know that the finer and lighter-coloured your hair is, the more damage it sustains?
Tips to protect your hair from summer heat
Wear a hat, scarf, or use a sun umbrella. The first line of defence is to keep the sun off your hair. Wear a stylish, loose hat or scarf, or use a summer umbrella made for this purpose.
Moisturizing conditioner. Heat robs your hair of moisture and dries it out. Replenish with a moisturizing conditioner every time you wash your hair.
Wash less/deep conditioning treatment. Washing hair removes the protective oils secreted by the scalp. Try to wash less in summer and use deep conditioning treatments more often.
Hydrate/drink water. Dehydration has a detrimental effect on your hair and scalp including thinning, drying, itchiness and flaking.. Keep yourself hydrated to keep your hair and scalp healthy.
Oiling. Ask one of our expert hairstylists to add an oiling treatment to your hair care regimen to nourish and protect your strands.
Hair sunscreen. Sunscreens for hair are different from those for the skin. Ensure you use the right ones in the right places before spending time in the sun.
Heat sprays. These are typically meant to protect your hair from hot irons, however, they also offer some protection against summer heat.
We hope these tips help you feel confident about your hair’s health heading into Vancouver’s sizzling summer weather. Remember to beat the heat using buns and braids to get your hair up off your neck and face. And if you’re looking to rock one of the coolest summer hairstyles, come in and see us!
